Nielsen Appoints two to the Company’s Board of Directors

Lookback releases an article titled, “The Art of Moderating Research.” It features seven key principles on how you can improve your moderating skills when conducting a user experience session. The principles are:

  1. Asking powerful questions
  2. Sitting through the struggle of the awkward silence
  3. Treat every participant with respect and dignity — even if they are the “wrong” participant for the study
  4. Be prepared to possibly feel a sense of connection with a participant at the end of a session
  5. It’s not prescriptive — you don’t have to get through all the questions.
  6. Beware of spoilers — it’s easy to slip up and accidentally provide clues to the participant
  7. Avoid confirmation bias

In human capital news, Former Uber Account Executive, Phillip Lomax, joins MediaScience as the Senior Vice President of Business Development.

Nielsen appoints two to the company’s Board of Directors — Tom Castro and Janice Marinelli, effective February 18.

The Adobe Design Research and Strategy Team is Looking for Interns

Netscribes, a global data and insights firm, announces the expansion of its India delivery centers. This comes after the news of employing 1,000 people worldwide.

Tealium and Invoca announce a strategic partnership that enables organizations to combine customer data and conversational analytics insights in real-time. Why? To better inform contact center interactions and optimize the caller experience. The key insight here is that consumer insights is expanding into enablement functions.

MediaScience, a lab-based research specialist, opens a tech-focused qualitative division, HARK Connect, a focus group remote viewing software with revolutionary features. I find it fascinating that there is a new entrant into the space of focus group remote viewing. However, HARK Connect is being led by Elissa Moses, an influencer in consumer insights and the previous CEO of Neuro and Behavior Science at IPSOS.

BERA Brand Management, a brand measurement and consultancy, teams up with PeakEquity Partners and the Jim Stengel Company. This capital will enable BERA to grow its team, scale its brand intelligence platform and expand its global presence.

In Wo(man) vs Machine, today I’m offering a review of Aurelius. If you are a Market Research Qualie or User Experience Researchers, you need to give this tool a chance. Totally self funded, the founding team have been doing consumer research for over 15 years. Aurelius is an insights platform for unstructured data analytics focused on creating key insight accessibility and visibility.

Rosenfeld Media is giving away three scholarships to researchers and students to attend the Advancing Research conference in New York City on March 30 and March 31.

There are more researchers focused on users, customers, and products than ever before, and those researchers’ needs are changing. Rosenfeld Media has already interacted with researchers through the Advancing Research community, which we curate, but wanted to learn more about who they are, where they work, and how they learn. And—as a conference-production company—we wanted to know what researchers seek from conference experiences.

In human capital news, P-O Westerlund is appointed as CEO of Nepa AB.

Seven Lessons From a Market Research Professional of 40 years

Kantar joins The Valuable 500, the global movement putting disability on the business leadership agenda. More than 200 companies have now pledged to take a definitive stand on diversity encompassing disability in the workplace.

The Association of Market and Social Research Organisations and ESOMAR Foundation collaborates to launch the Research Got Talent award competition, focused on encouraging young professionals to use research to address prominent social issues.

In human vs. computer, Merrill Shugoll, President of Shugoll Research, shared seven lessons he has learned from being in the market research industry for 40 years.

  1. Objectivity is key.
  2. Don’t get caught up in every new trend. Stay focused on what you do well.
  3. People may accept your invitation, but the incentive will ensure they show up.
  4. Homogeneity in focus groups can avoid hierarchies or tension in group dynamics.
  5. Qualitative and quantitative research work together.
  6. Make sure your clients understand the implications of their requests.
  7. Listen.

Don’t make the mistake of underestimating this list. Shugoll does a masterful job of telling us what we absolutely need to hear right now. Well done sir and thank you.

In human capital news, former Snap Head of U.S. Vertical Measurement, Cheryl Idell, is appointed as Chief Research Officer of WarnerMedia Entertainment & Direct-to-Consumer.

Vision Critical appoints Efrem Ainsley as Chief Operating Officer.

Finally, in shoutouts, MSeltz says on the Apple Podcast app, “This is a fantastic listen for anyone in the insights field. I always feel like I’m in a silo in this world, and hearing from industry experts facing the same challenges as me is refreshing.” MSeltz, I heart you too! DM me on Twitter or LinkedIn. We’ve got a special gift for you.

Microsoft and dunnhumby Announces a Global Strategic Partnership

Microsoft and dunnhumby announce their global strategic partnership where dunnhumby will move its customer insights products to Azure, Microsoft’s cloud platform.

This from Clare Barclay, Chief Operating Officer at Microsoft UK:

“Retailers sit on vast amounts of data but often struggle to create meaningful insights for themselves or their suppliers. Through this strategic partnership, retailers across the globe will benefit from the powerful intelligence that dunnhumby delivers through its market-leading tools with the scale, security and speed-to-market that has become synonymous with the Azure platform.”

Why is this so important? Incorporation of external data into primary data is a meaningful trend.

In Tool & Post news, we are researchers. We do this because we love it…and we get paid because we are good at it.

This segment highlights happenings in tech or knowledge. Sometimes it’ll be directly in the crosshairs of market research and sometimes it’ll simply be relevant.

Today, Josh LaMar, posted a must-read for consumer insight professionals titled, “A Fundamental Truth of User-Centered Design that is Simple, yet Forgotten.”

This article directly addresses the importance of understanding the context of usage of a product or service vs. just the product or service. As an early ethnographer at Microsoft, he lets us all draw from his experience.

In human capital news, one of the most interesting hires I’ve seen this year, Vision Critical naming Nicole Kealey as New Chief Strategy Officer. Why is she so interesting? Because Kealey was with Adobe for 13 years before joining SAP in 2012. For me, this hire points to Vision Critical’s continued investment in customer experience and keeps them in close connection with customers, competition and partners, e.g. Adobe.

Kealey, good luck and we look forward to your continued contribution to our space.
