This is episode 503 and, according to Spotify, Stay by The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber is still the number one song across the globe.

OK! Let’s get to this week’s news!

On January 12th, customer experience software provider AskNicely has raised $32m in a Series B round of funding. That is a hell of a lot of dough.

What are they going to do with all that cash? Well, whatever is left over after toasting with 1959 Dom Perigno, AskNicely says they will use the funds to expand their Frontline Success Platform.

Of course they are going to invest in their technology.

But, the press release also offered a very specific Objective & Key Result for the use of funds. Specifically, they will double their headcount across their offices in Portland, Auckland and Amsterdam.

This is interested for at least three reasons:

  1. First, they are specific about where the headcount is located. Why? I think because there are intrinsic benefits to working physically beside your peers. When you are in an office it is far easier to have a conversation and build relationships. However, this just isn’t normal today. In fact, many employees simply are unwilling to go back into an office full time. I believe that companies that require some weekly in office working will, ultimately, outperform their competitors.
  2. Second, does the world need another CX platform? In short, the answer is yes. And, there is a lot of room for additional players. This is a space that is growing at a 25%+ CAGR which means demand is outstripping supply. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are even larger investments coming from VCs in this space over the next 5 years.
  3. Thirdly, $32m! Yeah. That is a lot of money. And, they are spending it to hire top talent. If Google and Microsoft have taught us anything, talent trumps everything.

As little as 10 years ago, very few Venture Capitalist or Private Equity firms viewed consumer insights as an investable space.

Today, the nerd in the corner hoping someone would be with them is now the hot dude or dudette in the middle of the dance floor.

Line’m up! Cause we came to dance!

Speaking of dancing, have you seen that video of me dancing on TikTok? No? Cause I’m still editing it!

Recently, in our MRxPros Google Group, Neal, Managing Director of ABN Partners asked, “I just completed a series of interviews for a project. I want to create a video report. Does anyone know of a free video editor that can edit zoom videos?”

MRxPro Jaimi J said she uses “OpenShot Video Editor”. They describe their platform as “Hand-crafted with love and 100% FREE and open-source!”

We do have 2 additional contenders that are not free. And, a 3rd honorable mention that has a narrow use case.

Layla, Founder and Chief Insights Officer of Upward said, “We use Reduct Video. While it’s not free, it’s not that expensive and it’s really fabulous. Otherwise we have used iMovie in the past but you definitely have to do a lot more work – so to me it’s a no brainer to spend a bit on a tool to increase productivity.”

I did some research and found that Reduct Video transcribes your recordings that makes them easy to search for keywords or phrases. For me, as a market researcher, this is highly attractive as it allows you to get to key highlights without having to watch the entire video.

Lastly, Matt Seltzer said, “We’ve used Davinci Resolve in the past. Easy to use and free. As for the Zoom part, we just export a video file from Zoom and upload it into the software. So, not Zoom specific, but works with .mp4 which is what Zoom exports to.”

As for HubUX? We use Adobe Premier for large scale video projects. However, more and more of our videos are edited in TikTok’s editing software. The mobile first vertical alignment works surprisingly well in Presentations as it allows for additional content on your slide.

As more and more research is using video to express consumer’s POVs, intentions, feelings, and motivations, I expect tools will continue to evolve. Maybe even one day we will be able to upload our tens of hours of one on ones into some platform that will combine natural language processing with facial recognition of emotions and generate a highlight reel for us. Gosh, wouldn’t that be nice.

For our last segment, here is my interview with Aruna Bagchi on how does CX help organizations become more customer-centric.
